 EXTERIOR POLICY OF FELIPE IV


Peace of Westphalia.


The exhaustion of the powers forces to sign a treaty of peace in 1648, in which the independence of the United Provinces (Holland) is recognized, thus believing the Spaniards who would dominate France, Catalonia and Portugal, but they are mistaken, only It is the end of the Thirty Years' War.

The treaty of the Pyrenees had two important consequences:



  • France renounced Catalonia but gainned Roussillon and Cerdanya, as well as territories in Flandes.
  • A marriage was arranged between Louis XIV, king of France, and Maria Theresa, Archduchess of Austria and the daughter of Felipe IV, king of Spain
