FELIPE II ECONOMY:
As a result of this growth and the demand of America, agriculture had a constant rise; although labor lands were scarce (in the hands of nobles and clergy), and rental rates were high, many landless peasants and small landowners, stimulated by high agricultural prices, mortgaged (hipotecaban) their farms or borrowed (pedían prestamos) to rent new land.
